Splitwise vs Tasca: two different jobs people confuse
These two apps get compared constantly and they are not really competitors. Splitwise answers who owes whom. Tasca answers what this trip is costing me and what I can spend today. Plenty of people who travel with friends run both, and the mistake is expecting either one to do the other's job.
The short version
Choose Tasca if
- You want to know your own cost per day while the trip is happening

- You want conversion and receipt scanning without paying
Choose Splitwise if
- You need to settle up with other people

Splitwise does not tell you what your trip cost
This surprises people. A Splitwise group tells you your share of the expenses that went through the group, which is not the same as what you spent. The coffees you bought alone, the taxi you took by yourself, the souvenir nobody split with you: none of that is in there, because none of it involved anyone else.
So at the end of a trip you know you owe Sam forty dollars, and you still have no idea whether the trip cost you eleven hundred or nineteen hundred. That is the gap a personal tracker fills.
And Tasca will not settle your debts
Equally honest in the other direction. Tasca has no concept of other people. It splits one payment across categories or across days, but it will not track that you covered dinner and Sam covered the hotel.
If you are travelling as a group and money is moving between you, you want something that does that, and Splitwise is the obvious choice.
Running both, without doing everything twice
The workable pattern is simple. Shared costs go into your group app so the settle up stays correct. Everything, shared and personal, goes into Tasca at your own share, so your daily number reflects what you are actually spending.
That sounds like double entry, and for shared expenses it is, but shared expenses are usually a handful of large items rather than the long tail of small ones. Logging your share of six group payments over two weeks is a couple of minutes total.
- Log your share, not the full bill, when the cost is split
- Use the note field to mark which ones are group items
- Export at the end and reconcile once, if you care to
What free means, as at August 2026
Splitwise's free tier has tightened over the years. Independent reviews in 2026 report a cap of three expenses a day on free accounts, ads between screens, and currency conversion and receipt scanning reserved for Pro at around $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Check their own pricing page before you decide, because this changes.
Tasca has no cap, no ads and no Pro tier. That is easier for us to promise because Tasca has no servers to pay for, which is the same reason it cannot do group sync.
Questions
Can Tasca replace Splitwise?
Not for splitting costs between people. Tasca tracks one person's spending and has no concept of debts between group members. If you need a settle up at the end of a trip, keep using a splitting app.
Why would I use both?
Because they answer different questions. Splitwise tells you what you owe your friends. Tasca tells you what the trip is costing you and what you can spend today. Log shared costs at your own share in Tasca and the two stay consistent.
Is Tasca free without limits?
Yes. Unlimited trips and expenses, currency conversion, receipt scanning, stats and exports, with no ads and no paid tier.
