Tasca

An expense tracker that works with no signal and no account

The moments you most need to log something are the moments you have the least connectivity: a night bus, a border crossing, a basement restaurant, a plane. Tasca was built offline first, so none of that matters.

  • No sign up

No email, no password, no profile. Open the app and start a trip.

  • On device

Trips, expenses, categories and reports are stored locally and encrypted by iOS file protection.

  • Your iCloud

Sync between your own devices runs through your personal iCloud account.

What Tasca sends over the network

One thing: a request for exchange rates. It contains currency codes and a date. It does not contain your expenses, your trips, your location, an identifier for your device or anything about you.

There is no analytics SDK in the app. No advertising SDK. No third party crash reporting service shipping your session off device. This is verifiable in the app's own privacy disclosures, and it is the reason Tasca has no growth dashboard telling us which features you use.

Offline is the default, not a degraded mode

Every screen works with the network off. Logging, editing, filtering, the stats tab, country breakdowns, exports and PDF generation all run on local data. Exchange rates are cached, so conversion continues from the last rates the app fetched and flags anything that has gone stale.

The practical effect is that a fourteen hour flight is a fine time to catch up on the receipts in your pocket, and a week in a place with no data does not leave a hole in your records.

Getting your data out is a feature, not a favour

Because there is no account, there is no lock in to escape. Export any trip as JSON for a complete backup you can import straight back into Tasca, CSV for a spreadsheet, or a formatted PDF for a claim. Delete the app and your data goes with it.

  • No bank connection and no banking credentials, ever
  • Receipt scanning runs on device with Apple's Vision framework
  • File protection means the store is encrypted while your iPhone is locked
  • Sync is optional and can be turned off entirely

Common questions

Can I use Tasca with no internet at all?

Yes, indefinitely. The only thing that needs a connection is refreshing exchange rates, and Tasca keeps using the last rates it fetched until it can update them.

Where is my data stored?

In an encrypted database on your iPhone. If you enable iCloud sync it is also stored in your own private iCloud container, which only your Apple account can read.

What happens if I lose my phone?

With iCloud sync on, your trips restore to a new device when you sign in. With it off, restore from an encrypted iPhone backup, or from a JSON export you took yourself.
