Tasca

Categories that learn, and expenses that split

Categorising is the part everyone abandons first. Tasca reduces it to a tap most of the time, and to nothing at all once it has seen how you label things.

  • Suggested

Type a note and Tasca proposes the category it thinks you mean.

  • Learned

Correct it once and the next matching note goes to the right place.

  • Split

One payment across several categories, or across the days it covers.

It learns from corrections, silently

Tasca ships with a starter set of rules covering the words that mean the same thing everywhere: ramen and pho and tapas are food, metro and grab and shinkansen are transport. When you log something under a category the rules would not have picked, Tasca quietly writes a high priority rule of its own so the next one lands correctly.

It ignores words that carry no signal. Generic terms like expense, payment or misc are blocked, and prepositions that introduce a place rather than a thing are stripped, so logging "train to Germany" teaches it about trains and not about Germany.

The default categories look like travel, not like a bank app

Food and Drink, Alcohol, Transport, Accommodation, Groceries, Coffee, Activities, Shopping, Fees, Entertainment, Health, Data and SIM, and Misc. Each has an outline symbol and a muted colour rather than the neon palette expense apps default to. Add your own, use an emoji, change any colour.

Two kinds of split, for two different problems

A supermarket run that was half groceries and half wine is one payment across two categories. Tasca splits it by percentage so the total stays correct and each category gets its true share.

A five night hotel paid on arrival is one payment across five days. Tasca splits it evenly over the dates it covers, so night three does not look like a disaster and nights one, two, four and five do not look artificially cheap. Pick a quick option or set your own start and end dates.

  • Line item split by percentage across any number of categories
  • Even split across a date range for bookings and passes
  • Exclude an entry from the daily allowance without removing it from the trip
  • Mark money back as a refund, or log income against a trip
  • Repeat an existing expense onto today or the next few days

Common questions

Can I add my own categories?

Yes, with your own name, colour and either a system symbol or an emoji. You can also edit or remove the defaults.

How do I stop it suggesting the wrong category?

Just save the expense under the category you want. Tasca records that as a rule with higher priority than its built in ones, so the correction sticks.

Does a split expense show as one entry or several?

One payment, with its parts visible underneath. Totals, category breakdowns and exports all use the split amounts.
